In 1919, Walter Gropius wrote a manifesto for the Weimar State Bauhaus – the title page shows Lyonel Feininger’s woodcut “Cathedral”

INFORMATION

Esther Wilson highlighted the keywords “art” and “craftsmanship” in the original manifesto layout, using various colour blocks

INFORMATION

Using their original positions in the manifesto, she embroidered intense, abstract patterns on the textile surfaces of the D4

INFORMATION

With her interpretation of the D4, Esther Wilson creates works of art in a unique rhythm of composition and colour repetition

INFORMATION

The size and proportion of the colour blocks vary depending on the version of the chair – Wilson has scaled the pattern to fit perfectly on every one
