INFORMATION

Erich Bendel was a versatile designer of the 1920s and 1930s, whose work is situated between functional clarity and precision craftsmanship. He designed furniture and interiors that combined modern design with a homely atmosphere – functional, well thought-out and close to everyday life.

Erich Bendel (1898–1987) was active as an interior architect and furniture designer and worked in an environment that was characterized by Neues Bauen and the Bauhaus idea. His designs show a clear, reduced formal language without appearing cool – often in wood, functionally structured, sometimes with colorful accents.
Bendel was not loud, but consistent: his furniture was designed for suitability for everyday use and spatial effect, often modular and flexible in use. Although his name is less well known today, his work reflects the search of the time for a new living culture – functional, open and modern.
