Sergius Ruegenberg
INFORMATION
Sergius Ruegenberg was an architect, draughtsman and quiet designer – someone who was less in the spotlight, but who gave important impulses in the background. His drawings accompanied some of the most important modernist projects – including the Barcelona Chair – and show a subtle understanding of space, proportion and ideas.
Sergius Ruegenberg (1903–1996) was an exceptionally talented architect and draughtsman whose influence is less evident in constructed works than in processes and spaces of thought. He was involved in numerous important modernist projects, including providing drawings for the famous Barcelona Chair, which is now considered a design icon. He was also a central force in the background when collaborating with architects such as Egon Eiermann – a precise observer and mediator between idea and realisation.
Ruegenberg’s design work was closely linked to drawing: his sketches are more than technical means to an end, but rather search movements – open, subtle and with a special feel for the essentials. He did not think of architecture as a static form, but as a living process that unfolds through close observation and patient development.
